Humble Indie Bundle 11 - Guacamelee, Dust, Giana Sisters and The Swapper (Plus More!)

I managed to resist the Double Fine Humble Bundle and I resisted countless awesome bundles before that. Heck, I even managed to get through the Steam sale without a scratch, and hadn't purchased a single game this year. I regret to inform you, however, that the Humble Indie Bundle 11 has drawn first blood for 2014.

This is the first bundle (aside from publisher/developer-specific ones) where I actually recognized nearly all of the games in the bundle, and had heard great things about them. Guacamelee sold me on this one alone, but I'd also been very curious about Dust: An Elysian Tail and Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams.

Updated from 3/1 11:58am Eastern time. Behold the updated awesomeness, now with Fez!

I'd also heard great things about Antichamber and Monaco: What's Yours is Mine, but couldn't justify the extra $3.56 for the two games when I've had car repairs to take care of for weeks now. For those of you other gamers on a budget, keep in mind that you can get Guacamelee! Gold Edition, Dust: An Elysian Tail, Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams and The Swapper for as little as $0.01 if you do the "custom amount", but you'll want to spend at least $1.00 to get the Steam keys as well at least the minimum so you can grab Fez too! Besides, the more you spend, the more goes to the developers, the charities and the awesome Humble Bundle site as well.

Update: I'd originally paid $1 to get the Steam keys, but then when the other games were unlocked, the addition of Fez was just too much to resist! Seriously, you HAVE to grab this bundle!

The Humble Indie Bundle 11 ends Tuesday, March 4th, so if you're at all interested, it would be wise to act quickly. Enjoy!

Game Institute's Huge Game Developer Package Sale!

Yes, this might sound like an advertisement or something, but I wrote every word of it and I believe every word. I was not asked to write this, I was not paid for it, I didn't even get any free samples or stickers or anything! This entire article originates from being on their email list and just being genuinely excited about it!!!

One of the biggest problems with getting into game development, aside from the time required, is the high cost. If you've ever looked around any book store (or amazon.com, etc) for game programming books of any sort, you know all too well that $50-$60 is just an acceptable price for 300-400 pages of knowledge. That assumes, you know, that you did your research right, picked out a book that will actually work for you, doesn't assume you already know things that you don't, doesn't teach you the same things all over again... I seriously have at least $200 worth of books that are useless because I just couldn't get behind the way the author was putting the knowledge out there or had already learned those exact same things in another book (usually there's one or two chapters of goodness, but seriously, $60 is waaaaaay too much to gamble!).

Oh, and if you want to go to school for game development, unless you live near one of the few schools that teach it, you'll be going online, and that's ridiculously expensive too. I really love the looks of some of the schools (Digipen was the first I'd heard of and I drooled over the website for months), but there was no way I was affording it, and I don't believe in getting huge student loans that will take years (or decades) of my life to pay off.

The other day, I received an email from The Game Institute (I'm on their email subscription list) saying they were having a big sale. The Game Institute hosts a humongous array of game development training materials for wanna-be game developers of all sorts - it covers C++ programming, art/animation, math (yeah yeah, no one likes math except me, but you'll be using a LOT of math as a game programmer), AI (always one of my favorites, it's such an awesome field to learn) and even building your own game console (although if you want to actually build it, it's another $230 for the kit...). What's amazing is that all of this comes as one huge package, including online textbooks (you can purchase physical, but the price is unknown) and around 150 hours of presentations for only $99, but through January 1st it's only $49! That's less than gambling on one single book most of the time! Plus, apparently you also get any new stuff put out for a year. There's also the option of actually getting a professor to guide you and getting college credit for it, but I couldn't find a price for that anywhere without buying the package (and it's not payday yet...). You can actually find the huge, detailed list of everything here as well.

I wish I would have known about this sooner so I could have shared it as a Christmas gift idea for everyone, but it still makes an excellent gift idea for any game developers (or someone who would like to learn to become one!) in your life (or yourself!).

IndieGameStand's 12 Days of Christmas for Charity!

IndieGameStand has set up a genius - and awesome! - collection of free games that are being sold 100% for charity. Each day from December 18th to the 29th, two new games are revealed for "sale" for you to name your own price on (minimum 25 cents). Just like any of their other game sales, whoever contributes the most on a particular game will get a free t-shirt, and they don't even take the t-shirt price out of the donations - they pay for those out of their own pockets!

All of the money contributed - $1,555.38 as of today, December 20th at 11:45am - goes to Child's Play, one of my favorite charities, which makes it even  more awesome! IndieGameStand has put a good amount of work into this one, and it really is for an awesome cause, so check it out! Worst case, you'll find out about a whole bunch of games that you can get for as little as 25 cents each (or probably Google to find for free, but hey, it's charity!).

Indie Game: The Movie Sale

For those not familiar, Indie Game: The Movie is a really awesome movie about several indie game developers and some incredible moments along the way through the creation of their games. I haven't seen the movie since my birthday last year - it released June 12th, 2012 and my birthday is the 15th... I'd been psyched for it for months and it was the only thing I really wanted as a gift. I really need to watch it again and give it a proper review... But anyway, the movie is REALLY good and it's absolutely excellent for indie game developers, game players and makes a great way to introduce people who dislike games to the world of gaming. If you really want more info before you dive in, go check out the Wikipedia page.

FIVE hours of indie game developer awesomeness, plus lots of extra goodies? YES PLEASE!
Somehow, despite being a birthday gift a year and a half ago, I'm asking for it now again for Christmas. The original purchase was a download, and now it's moved on to DVD, Blu-Ray and even a special edition with OVER FIVE HOURS of footage! I'd absolutely love to see more about the developers and their stories!

Gamestop's Playday at Gamestop

Yes, I realize that taking your kids anywhere this close to Christmas where there are toys and video games makes your money disappear faster than setting it on fire, but I just had to write about this because it's so unique and fun, so bear with me! :D

On December 7th, Gamestop is running a big sale/special day that they're calling Playday at Gamestop. The first 50 customers (it doesn't say "visitors" so it's probably the first 50 people who buy something, but it doesn't specify in the email) get a free Super Mario 3D World sticker sheet, and they'll be demoing fun kids games as well. There are also sales on several games, such as the Disney Infinity Toy Box Challenge Starter Pack ($59.99 instead of $74.99) and the Skylanders Swap Force Starter Pack ($49.99 instead of $74.99). There's also the all-new Skylanders Swap Force Jolly Bumble Blast character for $9.99 and other games as well.

You can check the webpage for more details and to verify that your location is doing it, but the email makes it sound like all of them will be. If you've got young gamers (or just want Disney Infinity or Skylanders yourself), go check it out!

IndieGameStand Cyber Monday (And Beyond) Sale

IndieGameStand is running a Cyber Monday sale at the moment with no announced end date (so I'd hurry up!). I haven't played most of the games, but here's a list of the ones I've seen in action and would definitely suggest:

I'm sure there are LOTS of other great games in there that I simply don't recognize (or missed), so check it out and stock up on some games!

Name Your Own Price for Tower of Guns on IndieGameStand!

Tower of Guns is one of the games I've received a review copy of and haven't had time to try out and review yet, despite how awesome it looks. The concept is summed up best by the developer himself:
"Tower of Guns is a fast paced first-person-shooter for the twitch gamer... with a few roguelike-ish-y elements to keep it fresh with each playthrough. Think of it like FTL or Binding of Isaac mixed with Doom 2." - Taken from the IndieGameStand page
