It takes only seconds to see the heart of this cute adventure. Lilly is standing there staring at a frog. When you click on it, she does a little hop. The frog turns away and she does a couple frog-hops toward him. Soon after the frog hops away, perhaps just as she would have followed in suit, a red scarf blows by. Unless it were a Scarf of Awesomeness +4 in any other game, this would mean absolutely nothing, but for Lilly it's enough to go on an adventure!
The graphics fit perfectly with the spirit of the game, the ever-adorable Lilly exploring a gorgeous little town. She prances, jumps about, climbs, flails to try to climb a small hill and slides down it as she fails. The best way I can explain it would be if you turned Myst or Riven into an interactive children's book that's irresistible for adults as well.
Just because it features a cute little girl and overflows with childlike playfulness doesn't mean it's boring or easy though; even with a help button that highlights exactly what you can interact with, many puzzles still require true thought to overcome. The second screen, for example, has a puzzle where Lilly must cross a pond, and it takes interaction with two different levers and a button to succeed.

It's here that the "Looking Through" from the title comes into play - wearing the goggles allows Lilly to essentially travel through time, letting her see things (presumably) the way they were before everything started to get old and deteriorated. You can see exactly what I mean in the image below; this is the same screen as the one above while wearing the goggles! The following screen incorporates the goggles beautifully, requiring you to go back and forth while messing about.

My favorite thing about the demo was the animation style, its quite timeless
ReplyDeleteWow, I was playing through the demo just thinking about how beautiful the areas are, i'm not sure on the character models not being in the same style but it does make it much easier to see where you are! It looked interesting, something i'll definately pick up even though it's not my style of game, i'm intriuged to see how the goggles are used in the later puzzles! that is a great thing to have, can't wait to see what else is waiting for me to find.
